In Celebration of the Life of Terry Patty

A Life Of Music

Dad absolutely loved music, and he loved to sing. He always had his guitars close by, and every time he was over, I could guarantee he'd pick mine up and tune it. I miss that, and so does my out of tune guitar. When we were young, it was such a frequent thing to hear singing throughout our house, I was surprised at how silent other people's homes seemed by comparison. Didn't everyone's dad know Rocky Mountain High? The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald? Puff the Magic Dragon? Wow, did I feel bad for those kids. I'm certain I took it for granted at the time, but I treasure the memory.

Also, show tunes. All four of us share a love of musicals, both Robyn and I had the entire Rogers and Hammerstein catalog memorized by the time we learned to ride a bike. In recent years, Dad and I shared a love of Phantom and Les Miserables. There is absolutely no one I connect to like I did with dad when it comes to the emotional reaction we'd get from hearing someone with great talent perform those songs. After we went to see Les Mis on screen, he showed me a special performance they'd done in London to celebrate the Les Mis 25th, where the different casts over the years, including the film, came together and performed every song. We watched it together mesmerized. Dads favorite was Bring Him Home. This song now lives permanently in my heart.

I love you Dad
